A Chandigarh court on Friday granted bail to Gurmeet Singh, who was found guilty of killing former Punjab chief minister Beant Singh. He was granted bail in the court of Chief Judicial Magistrate Aman Inder Singh Sandhu with two sureties totaling Rs 2 lakh each.
The convict's attorneys Jaspal Singh Manjpur and Dilsher Singh Jandiala filed the bail application in light of the Punjab and Haryana High Court's January order to release all convicts who had served out their life sentences on regular bail while the decision regarding their permanent release was still pending.
Gurmeet has been imprisoned for more than 27 years. Gurmeet, who is currently being held at Chandigarh's Burail prison, requested release because he had already served 27 years in prison. He claimed that he shouldn't face discrimination because many other life-sentenced prisoners have been released after serving their full 14-year sentences.
